about
Another old song is "The Last Day". In this one, the perspective of a person is taken who, for unnamed reasons, has not managed to leave home behind and is now pulled into a tunnel of bad thoughts by the everyday dreariness. In this respect, "The Last Day" is an antithesis to "Cold Town" with its positive mood of departure. With its 6/8 beat and the key jump at the end, the song is somehow more bulky and experimental than the rest of the record.
lyrics
The walls are closing in
And the streets just run in circles
We’re lying on our backs
In the pavement we were born
The first time I got drunk
Was the last day of dignity
I couldn’t stand you
You hadn’t had a trace of grace
So why should we behave?
Why should we be nice?
Why should we be happy?
We gave in to this life...
And the love that we found
Was out of fear of disappointments
And all your mother said
Was “make the most of now!”
Whenever we look in the mirror
We try to avoid looking into our eyes
During nights of being unfaithful
And everybody knows
So why should we behave?
Why should we be nice?
Why should we be happy?
We gave in to this life...
